Just because you are

Generally we are all selfish individuals. Sometimes, when we are facing some odd midlife crisis, we lose sight of our goal, we lose our heads and we live a life without purpose. The tale of a man who does not know his life’s purpose is a common tale, familiar among men. Great artists like Van Gogh had the purpose of illuminating the arts world, Einstein shed light to modern science and Edison invented light bulbs. These individuals had made life more comfortable for men, having their inventions living through centuries and still striking awe in those who appreciate it. They had their brains and their creativity but what of me? We all ask that sometimes. However, in truth, there is no such thing as one born without a purpose. In fact, we all share one common purpose, including Van Gogh, Einstein and Edison – we are all meant to change lives.

The world works in psychology. It is a known fact that the world is always changing, but in those changes, so too have some things remained constant. That is in the more human side of things. All human are vulnerable to influences. Just planting an idea in an individual would have changed the individual’s perspective entirely. For instance, when our parents decided to have us, just the idea of our future presence in their lives would have sparked a change. A change in personality is easily brought about. The way we think defines our personality. Therefore, be it with just a word or a gesture, as long as we make someone else thinks, we can be almost certain that we have contributed to the being’s character building.

Phenotype is the combination of genotype and environmental factor. I have always believed that genotype is what your parents give to you and environmental factor is what God has prepared for you. Environmental factor here being you and I in each other’s lives. I do believe that personality can be inherited genetically but at the same time, it can be overridden by environmental factors because the mind is a powerful thing. It holds everything in perspective. It can cause pain and it can relieve pain.

Now, we have to understand the bond among us. We do what we do for each other, selfishly or otherwise. We struggle up the social ladder because we want others to look up to us. We work hard to excel because we want to be known as capable. We work for money and job satisfaction because we want to feed our family and our needs. It’s all brain food, literally. We do not do what we do for absolutely nothing. It is always either we do to help others or we do to have others look at us and marvel. Nevertheless, the bottom line is the same. We drive each other; therefore we change each other’s lives, solely by our existence. With the growing world population, it does not matter if I know you or if you know me. Just the simple regard that you are there, alive and fighting for a place in the world is enough to keep one going.

Hence the next time you think life is purposeless, look around you. It is a pain to keep going because others are doing it. But it is the only way any human can be driven. We keep going for others because we know we can. We want to help others and we want to help ourselves. It is human nature. It is what keeps us sane and paradoxically, it is also what makes us go insane. Some times. And at the moment, I will try keep myself sane… just because you are.
